Suicide Bombers in Iraq

What is ISIS?

ISIS is not a new organization, nor is its cruel sectarian violence. This organization has its roots in the lead up to the Iraq war and its violence is strategically calculated to produce a failed Iraqi state where violent extremists can thrive.   It is enabled by foreign fighters, global extremist networks, and regional powers interested in proxy wars. Once again, the United States is drawn into war without an end in Iraq.

Suicide Bombers in Iraq sheds light on the origins of the strategy and ideology of the Islamic State, its sectarian warfare, and extremist narratives rooted in its jihadi-Salafi worldview.

“Brilliantly considered, crisply written, unsparing in its conclusions, Suicide Bombers in Iraq is an absolutely essential contribution to understanding the factions that are warring over the future of that shattered country, the region, and Islam.”

—Lawrence Wright, author of The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11
